In our first 2018 NBA Mock Draft to coincide with the start of the college basketball season, we have Duke power forward Marvin Bagley going ahead of small forward Michael Porter. With Duke on national TV almost every game, the buzz surrounding Bagley’s play is going to be palpable. Not that NBA GMs really care about national buzz, but by the time February rolls around a consensus is typically formed on the No. 1 overall pick. Historically, playing at blue blood school helps. Here are the last five No. 1 overall picks: Markelle Fultz (Washington), Ben Simmons (LSU), Karl-Anthony Towns (Kentucky), Andrew Wiggins (Kansas), Anthony Bennett (UNLV).
Porter playing at Missouri is not exactly college basketball wilderness but if Bagley gets off to a dominant start to this season, expect the No.1 pick buzz to increase rapidly.
Also something to look at regarding this NBA Mock is the odd order of teams right now. No one in their right mind thinks the Pistons will be picking at No. 27 next June and no one in their right mind thinks the Oklahoma City Thunder will be picking seventh.
There’s still, obviously a ton to sort out so think of this as an extremely rough draft of a mock.
