8 temporarily homeless after fire

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of a fire on Gottingen Street that has left eight people temporarily homeless.

The fire began early yesterday morning and swept through a row of six townhouses at 2513 and 2515 Gottingen St., said Halifax Regional Fire platoon Chief Brison Wilson.

The couple living next door was alerted by a smoke detector around 4 a.m. and woke up their neighbours. All tenants and pets made it out safely.

The tenant living in the townhouse where the blaze began was away at the time, a release from the Canadian Red Cross said.

A woman was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

While at least two of the units will require extensive repairs, most of the other tenants will be able to return to their homes within the next few days, said Wilson.
