A gift that makes you give

I received a gift certificate from a girlfriend for X-mas. It is for both of us (it was a two-for-one deal) at a spa. After reading the fine print I noticed that “we” are responsible for tax and tip.

My question is this: should I have to pay for my half? I didn’t expect to have to end up paying for a gift. Fifteen per cent tax and 15 per cent tip (at least) is going to end up being kinda spendy on the $200 gift certificate. Am I wrong to expect her to pay for at least the tax and I can be left to decide what tip I would leave?

Dear Karen,

I fully agree with you that it would be correct for your friend to pay the taxes on the gift that she has given you. However, I suspect that this is going to end up your expense. I find it strange that the taxes were not collected at the time of purchase, however it is what it is. Putting taxes aside, any gratuity would be your responsibility unless your friend advises you that she has taken care of this.
