Soon, women may not need to bother finding a husband. A Washington, D.C., hospital has taken sperm donations one step farther. It allows women to select sperm donors according to their lifestyle.
“Most sperm banks allow customers to search for donors according to race and ethnicity,” explains Dr. Michelle Ottey, Laboratory Director at Fairfax Cryobank outside Washington, D.C. “But people looking for a sperm donor look for a whole person, not just appearance.” Now Fairfax Cryobank, one of the United States’ largest sperm banks, has introduced a new search tool that features not just vital details but categories from religion to sports.
Users can decide whether they want a donor who likes to cook or paint, prefers fish as pets, wants to help the environment, likes to help people, and everything in between. “Couples are looking for a sperm donor who resembles the male partner as closely as possible,” says Ottey. “Single women, on the other hand, are looking for an ideal notion of their partner. Many women start out with one idea about the man they’re looking for but often find somebody else they like.” After selecting a donor at Fairfax Cryobank’s website (donorsearch.fairfaxcryobank.com), customers can simply click on a button to order the sperm.
Such choices seem to pave the way for a futuristic society where women don’t have to bother with boyfriends and husbands. “But there’s no substitute for finding love”, says Ottey. “This won’t make men obsolete.”
