ACORN fighting for EI rights

Members of the Ottawa Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now rallied downtown Thursday as part of a national day of protest to demand EI Reform from the federal government.

“Only 42 per cent of unemployed people receive EI at any given time,” said Kat Fortin, chair of the Mechanicsville Hintonburg-area ACORN.

This is because fewer workers qualify, she said.

The group is looking to raise awareness and also to collect signatures for a petition, which will be forwarded to the government.

The group was also looking to have the government increase benefit duration to 50 weeks in all regions.
