Activists rally at courthouse

Animal rights activists were angry that another appearance by an alleged dog killer has been put off for another two weeks in a Sherwood Park provincial courtroom.
“This is upsetting,” said Deb Kakoschke, a resident from Fort Saskatchewan outside court yesterday. “This is an abuse of the system.”
Sammy, a five-year-old, white mixed-breed dog, was found with its throat slit behind its owner’s shed Feb.16 in the rural Camelot Square subdivision near Range Road 233 and Township Road 520.
Close to a dozen residents and members of Voice for Animals showed up at the courthouse holding signs and pictures, one reading “Sammy was murdered.”
One couple from Calgary made the trip to support the animal activists who say the case has upset them.
The accused failed to show up at a previous court date, but this time his lawyer set a new date to May 7.
Shawn Eugene Rankin, 42, faces a charge of unlawfully killing an animal.
