Ward 2 is only slightly bigger than Ward 1, with a population of about 67,000, but it has twice as many candidates running for a council seat.
The ward has a mix of industrial land and residential properties and is home to the City Centre Airport, something that’s sure to be on the minds of voters in the northwest section of the city.
Incumbent Kim Krushell said voting to close the airport was the toughest decision she had to make as a councillor, but her research showed that shutting it down would be the right decision.
Challenger Roxie Malone-Richards is on the other side of the fence. She said nearly 100,000 Edmontonians said they would like to keep the airport open and would have liked to see the question asked on the Oct. 18 ballot.
Don Koziak, who originally planned to run for mayor, is another challenger in Ward 2, along with Alberta Aviation Museum’s Thomas Hinderks, two-time candidate Shelley Tupper and safe-community advocate Michael Waddy.
