Alderman sheds light on city’s power failings

Calgary’s poor Earth Hour showing has an alderman musing about turning out the lights.

The city’s collective efforts resulted in only a one per cent drop in power consumption on Saturday night — a dim showing according to Ald. Brian Pincott — and the disappointment caused a light bulb to go off in his head.

He said Toronto managed to cut its power by 15 per cent and if Calgary can’t match that, he wants to see city-owned Enmax force people to be more energy conscious.

“I’ll be putting forward a motion to have Enmax turn the power off once a month for one hour until we catch up,” he said. “We know Calgarians want to do their part for the environment, they just need a little help.”

Pincott is also planning to ban all electricity use in the city, one day a year on April 1.
