Members of city council will be referred to as councillor rather than the long-standing title of alderman following the next election.
After a back and forth debate today and several years of discussion, council pass the name change in a nine to six vote.
“It’s equity for all…and it is just simply time we change the name,” said Ald. Shane Keating, one of the mover of the motions before the vote.
Mayor Nenshi also urged his colleagues to pass the motion.
“I think this is a particularly important move for council to make,” said Nenshi. “Symbols do matter and they may not matter to everyone but they matter to some people.”
