Four people allegedly responsible for the largest fare-evasion scheme in MBTA history are scheduled to be in court today.
According to the attorney general’s office, Joceline Townes, 41, of Attleboro and Alex Saunders, 28, of Beverly, will be arraigned after a statewide grand jury indicted them in November for receiving stolen property and conspiracy.
Townes’ brother, Andres, 27, of Revere, is also due in court for a hearing. He was arrested last year for allegedly producing thousands of unauthorized T passes worth millions of dollars. He worked for Cubic Transportation Systems, an independent vendor that handled the fulfillment of T passes purchased online and over the phone.
Townes and Saunders, along with Gloria Escobar, 27, of Revere, and Susan Gillis, 46, of Foxboro, sold the illegal passes online through Craigslist after they received them from Andres Townes, authorities said. The passes, worth about $250 each, were sold at a discount by the group who then split the profits, according to authorities.
Escobar is due in court today for a conference hearing.
The scam, which authorities believe dates back to November 2007, was finally brought down when a Commuter Rail conductor questioned a faded pass that a rider said she bought through Craigslist.
