While Lesya Holubowich was at school yesterday, her mother Lorraine fought back tears as she picked up her daughter’s four awards at the Downtown Eastside Photography Contest Award Ceremony at Carnegie Community Centre.
Twelve-year-old Lesya’s photograph, Monkey Bars, tied for third in the black-and-white category and is included in the 2011 Hope in Shadows calendar. This is the first year the calendar will include colour photos.
The Holubowich family was recently homeless for two months until the non-profit Pivot Legal Society and Portland Housing Society helped them find a home.
Pivot has been holding the annual photography contest since 2003, giving out disposable cameras to participants. Lorraine stood in line to get one for her daughter.
Judges selected 40 winners from 4,000 submissions this year.
“Hope in Shadows has changed the way people see our community all over the world,” said Elisha May Walker, whose photograph Shadow Friends won second place in the colour category.
A collection of the photographs will show at the Pendulum Gallery, 885 W. Georgia St., from Oct. 12 to 23.
