Arch West was a Frito-Lay marketing executive who, in 1961 took his family on vacation to San Diego. He happened upon a fried tortilla snack shack. The Associated Press quotes his daughter Jana Hacker as saying that the company originally didn’t take to the idea, but that West made his case through a wildly favorable response in marketing research tests he conducted on the sly. Doritos were finally sold in 1964.
Sadly on Tuesday at the age of 97, Mr. West passed away in his hometown of Dallas due to natural causes. Hacker is quoted as saying that at the funeral, the family plans on “tossing Doritos chips in before they put the dirt over the urn.”
We now have to call our lawyer for a change to our own will and testament.
Mr. West, thanks for all the ‘Ritos, Fritos and Tostitos! Your contribution to the world is a significant one in the world of snack foods, which we will never forget.
