Argos, als show flaws

One heartbreaking loss in overtime is hardly a harbinger of a great team’s decline, but the Montreal Alouettes could be showing signs of slipping from their position as the CFL’s dominant team. The Als’ season-opening loss in Saskatchewan, which included a blown 21-point, third-quarter lead, was a sloppy start for a team looking to defend its Grey Cup title.

Yes, Mosaic Stadium in Regina is the toughest place for a visiting team to play, and the Riders and their fans have been starving for revenge since last November’s championship game. Still, there is cause for concern.

It was surprising to see Anthony Calvillo, the CFL’s elder statesman, lose track of downs, which cost his team a field goal. But the defence also looks confused after some key departures following last season. Giving up 54 points is deplorable, even against the Riders’ high-octane offence.

The Toronto Argos will need everyone on board to have any success this season with rookie starter Cleo Lemon at the helm. That didn’t happen in Week 1. Jeremaine Copeland and Chad Owens both fumbled, and a number of dropped passes added to Lemon’s misery during a 192-yard passing performance during a loss to Calgary.

“When you have a young quarterback, you can’t do that,” warned head coach Jim Barker.

Finding a veteran backup QB might be a wise investment for Barker, who doesn’t have a dependable option at the most important position.
