Assault charge laid after man’s head injured

Police have charged a 25-year-old Halifax man with aggravated assault after an incident at a downtown bar sent a man to hospital with a serious head injury early Thursday.

Jonathan Lawrence Briggs was to appear in Halifax provincial court on Thursday in relation to an incident on Grafton Street outside of Cheers at about 2:30 a.m.

Halifax Regional Police spokesman Const. Brian Palmeter said an altercation broke out inside the bar between two patrons.

A 22-year-old man fell to the ground after being pushed out a door and struck his head on a sidewalk outside Cheers. Police say the man was unconscious and bleeding from the head when officers arrived on the scene.

“There was some kind of communication between the two individuals inside, at which time the victim was pushed out the door,” Palmeter said.

Palmeter said police don’t believe the incident began as a consensual fight.
