Assault victim identified

Investigators have now identified a woman who was found semi-conscious and almost naked in a wooded area of Carlington Park Saturday morning, but said the next steps in finding her assailant hangs on an interview with the victim.

“My understanding is she was … in and out of consciousness and highly sedated,” said Sexual Assault Unit Staff Sgt. John McGetrick. “We’re evaluating that continuously. As soon as we are able, we will speak with her.”

The victim, a white female in her 30s, whose identity police did not release, is in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

An area resident out walking with his grandson and dog at early Saturday found her. She was taken to Civic Hospital.

Having the woman’s identification will open some leads, McGetrick said. “It’s nice to know who she is. It enables other investigative avenues.”
Still, investigators won’t be further ahead until they are able to speak with the woman.

“We don’t really know what we’re investigating yet,” he said. “It could be something very personal and until we know better, we have to respect the victim’s privacy.”

Police continued to interview neighbours and collecting and examining video from nearby buildings and cash machines yesterday.

In the meantime, McGetrick warns people in the area to be vigilant.
“It’s very unnerving,” he said of the attack.
