For all you casual baseball fans out there, let me welcome you to Major League Baseball’s version of Christmas morning. Wednesday night provides the grandest stage for baseball’s historic theater, a winner-take-all Game 7 for the World Series title between the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers staved off elimination on Tuesday night with a 3-1 win over Houston in which they were able to get just enough off Astros starter Justin Verlander, who had been the closest thing to perfect since being acquired by the team from Detroit in late August.
It’s only fitting for this instant classic of a series to go the distance given the thrills we’ve had along the way:
Now the gloves are off as rhyme or reason is crumpled up and thrown out the window.
Lance McCullers will start for the Astros against the hosting Dodgers’ Yu Darvish. McCullers, who closed out the Yankees in Game 7 of the ALCS, has garnered a 2.95 ERA in 18.1 innings pitched this postseason. He most recently started Game 3 of the World Series in Houston where he allowed three runs in 5.1 innings of work, which was enough to get the win.
Darvish is coming off a far-less impressive outing in that very same Game 3. He was only able to get through 1.2 innings before he was pulled, allowing four runs on six hits.
But the big arms on both sides are available and ready to go regardless of rest, which makes it more likely that we will see a cameo from Clayton Kershaw or Dallas Keuchel on Wednesday night.
