Athlete’s Village hits milestone green standard

The Athlete’s Village in Vancouver is North America’s greenest community, Mayor Gregor Robertson said yesterday.

The southeast False Creek neighbourhood is the second in the world to receive a LEED platinum certification. The U.S. Green Building Council awarded it for the village’s location next to the downtown and sustainable energy profile.

“Achieving LEED platinum is a big feather in our cap, as we move toward our goal,” Robertson said, referring to Vancouver’s aspiration to be the world’s greenest city by 2020. The Athlete’s Village was also especially commended for its Net Zero building, a city first, that produces as much energy as it consumes.

While Robertson said he is enjoying the Games, he said he is looking forward to converting the 2,800 athletes’ homes into a community for 16,000 Vancouverites.
