The Colorado Avalanche signed 21-year-old defenseman Samuel Girard to a seven-year contract extension that extends through the 2026-27 season.

According to reports, the contract averages $5 million per season and has a total value of $35 million.

Girard played in all 82 regular season games for Colorado in the 2018-19 season, extending his consecutive games streak to 150. He tallied 27 points (four goals. 23 assists) and finished sixth on the club in average ice time (19:53).

Girard, who was a second-round selection by Nashville in the 2016 NHL Draft, joined the Avalanche on Nov. 5, 2017, as part of a three-team trade that included Ottawa.

“Samuel has been one of our best all-around defensemen since joining the Avalanche,” said Joe Sakic, Colorado’s general manager. “He plays important minutes and is someone our coaches count on to play against other teams’ top lines. He has an exceptional ability to skate and move the puck. As a member of our core, we felt it was important to sign him to a long-term deal and we are excited to announce this extension.”

In his career, Girard has 50 points (eight goals, 42 assists) in 155 games between Colorado and Nashville.
