B.C. Hydro workers sent to hospital after underground fire, explosion in downtown Vancouver

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Two B.C. Hydro workers remain in hospital after a
fire and possible explosion in a manhole in downtown Vancouver.

A
spokeswoman for the utility company said the seasoned workers were
doing routine maintenance when the incident happened just after 11 a.m.
Wednesday.

She says the workers have serious burns but are expected to recover.

A third worker, who was supervising from above, was taken to hospital and released after being treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the incident is being investigated.

Dozens
of fire fighters and police were at the scene trying to determine what
happened, causing street closures and long traffic lineups on one of
the busiest shopping days of the year.
