B.C. tops in online buys

British Columbia had the largest proportion of online buyers last year, with 47 per cent making a purchase over the Internet, according to a Statistics Canada report released yesterday.

The national average is 39 per cent.

The popularity of online shopping is growing, with more Canadians ordering online and each person making an average of nine purchases, the study said.

In all, Canadians spent $15.1 billion online in 2009 — that’s $2.3 billion more than in 2007.
