The province’s anti-auto theft “bait car” program now allows police to watch and listen to car thieves in real time.
Bait Car Live, unveiled yesterday at the start of Auto Enforcement Month, introduces live monitoring technology so police can tell how many people are in the vehicle and whether or not they are armed.
Police dispatchers will be able to watch and listen to thieves and relay any information to the responding officers.
With the previous bait car technology, officers could only watch the videos after the car was stopped.
• There has been a 47 per cent decline in auto theft since the program’s introduction in 2003. In that time, auto theft claims have fallen by $40 million.
