Beaches, parks, shopping and more

Babies in strollers, dogs on leashes and locals with yoga mats flung over their shoulder sums up The Beach. With four beaches, lush parks, tree-lined streets and great schools, this neighborhood is a huge draw for parents.

The beaches lining the southern edge of the neighborhood (Balmy, Scarboro, Kew and Woodbine) are packed in the summer with tourists and locals trying to escape the city’s heat. In the colder months, locals have the sandy strips and boardwalks to themselves (and their pups), while some brave and dedicated surfers even venture into the lake at Ashbridge’s Bay to catch the winter waves.

The main commercial strip of Queen Street East is chock-full of restaurants, cafes and shops. Sushi is a staple with two spots ordering their fish daily from Japan, Aki Da and Akane-Ya.

Beach dwellers with an afternoon or evenings off, head to the Gull & Firkin for pub food and a pint on their huge patio.
