St. Louis Blues defenseman Carl Gunnarsson will stay with the Stanley Cup champions after agreeing Thursday to a two-year, $3.5 million contract.

“Thank you St Louis and the Blues,” Gunnarsson tweeted after the deal was announced. “So happy and grateful for the opportunity to stay in STL for 2 more years.”

The native of Sweden scored one of the biggest goals of his career in Game 2 of the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals. With the game tied in overtime, Gunnarsson slapped a one-timer past the Boston Bruins’ Tuukka Rask to win the contest and even the series.

Gunnarsson, 32, has played 10 years in the NHL, the past five with St. Louis. The 2018-19 season was a difficult one for the veteran, as he dealt with injuries. He played in only 25 regular-season games and also missed some time in the playoffs.

The three goals and four assists Gunnarsson produced in the regular season increased his career totals to 28 goals and 101 assists in 581 NHL games. He opened his career by playing five seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Gunnarsson would have been an unrestricted free agent if he had not re-signed with the Blues.
