CFB TRENTON – A piper played Amazing Grace as the flag-draped coffins of two Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan last week arrived at CFB Trenton, in eastern Ontario.
Cpl. Jean-Francois Drouin and Maj. Yannick Pepin died Sunday when a roadside bomb detonated near their armoured vehicle.
Dignitaries included Defence Minister Peter MacKay and Vice-Admiral Denis Rouleau.
Family members hugged and placed flowers on the coffins.
Soldiers saluted as the bodies were placed in hearses for the journey along a stretch of Highway 401 that has come to be called the Highway of Heroes to the coroner’s office in Toronto.
Both men were members of the 5 Combat Engineer Regiment based at CFB Valcartier, Que.
Five other Canadian soldiers were injured in the blast, but are in good condition.
