New Hampshire’s Androscoggin River is the symbolic title body that flows through the pages of American novelist John Irving’s latest. Opening in the mid-1950s, Last Night In Twisted River follows Dominic Baciagulpo and his son Danny, employed in a logging camp kitchen. A water death that opens the novel and subsequent accidental killing urge the father and son to flee the camp, escaping to Massachusetts, Vermont, Iowa and Ontario over the book’s 50-year span. Mixing conflicts of crime and Danny’s struggles as a writer across locales, the novel can be haphazard in plot but remains in Irving’s style.
