In the early pages of Stone’s Fall, its title comes to correspond quite literally to the fall from a window suffered by wealthy pre-First World War London financier, John Stone, which results in his death. But the magnitude of his demise is realized later, when his widow Elizabeth hires a former journalist, Matthew Braddock, to track down a child of Stone’s who is mentioned in his will. Braddock, quickly falling for Elizabeth, soon discovers Stone wasn’t worth all that he boasted. But as the story unfolds in reverse chronology, a spy in Italy uncovers that Elizabeth herself may not be all she claims.
