Last week, after failing to qualify for a bowl game in his first year guiding Temple in the Big East, Steve Addazio promised that 2013 would be different.
“This offseason won’t be a box of chocolates,” Addazio warned. “It’s 2013 in my mind right now.”
Well, when the calendar turns to 2013, it will be completely different for Addazio. The head football coach at Temple resigned Tuesday and accepted the very same position at Boston College. He takes over a struggling BC program that went just 2-10 last season.
Addazio leaves Temple after compiling a 13-11 record in two seasons, including the school’s first bowl win in 32 years. Prior to that, Addazio won two national championships while serving as Florida’s offensive line coach.
“We were very meticulous,” Boston College AD Brad Bates said regarding his first signature hire as head of Eagles athletics. “We talked to NFL owners, NFL coaches, commissioners, college head coaches and assistant coaches, executive directors — we talked to a lot of people.”
Temple was highly disappointed to see Addazio go.
“Steve Addazio has done a tremendous job with Temple football in his two years at the university, and we wish him nothing but the best,” said Temple athletic director Bill Bradshaw. “Temple football has never been stronger, and I am confident we will be able to attract a high-level pool of candidates for the position and the program will continue its upward momentum.”
One of the reasons as to why Bates landed on Addazio may be the fact that the Temple coach showed he could recruit extremely well. Upward momentum was evidenced by Temple’s 2012 recruiting class (ranked No.1 in the Mid-American Conference) and by having three Owls (Bernard Pierce, Evan Rodriguez, Tahir Whitehead) get selected in the 2012 NFL Draft.
