A massive winter storm is approaching the Bay State and is expected to coat much of Eastern Massachusetts in up to 14 inches of snow.

The National Weather Service on Wednesday issued a winter storm watch for much of the state. The watch starts at 1 a.m. Thursday and doesn’t expire until 10 a.m. Friday. A storm watch means that the potential exists for more than 6 inches of snow in a 12 hour period or 8 inches in a 24 hour period.

The snowfall is expected to start after midnight on Thursday and continue into Thursday day. The worst of the storm is expected to be Thursday night into early Friday with rates of 1 to 2 inches of snowfall per hour possible.

Near blizzard conditions are possible at times along the coast.

“A coastal storm will bring the potential for heavy snow along with dangerously cold wind chills and perhaps near blizzard conditions possible for a time along the Eastern Massachusetts coast,” the weather service said in its storm watch advisory.
