Keith Lockhart already thinks Boston has made its mark as a notable city, but the longtime Boston Pops conductor wants to turn the Hub into the most musical town in the world.
This Saturday, Lockhart and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus will attempt to lead thousands of carolers in an effort to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the “Most Carolers in one Place” at the Christian Science Plaza.
To beat the current record-holder in Australia, the singing group needs to amass more than 9,100 carolers in one spot and sing for 15 minutes straight.
“When people ask what we will be singing, I tell them pretty much [every Christmas carol],” said Lockhart.
The city attempted the feat last season but was shy by about 5,000 volunteers.
Lockhart hopes to build momentum prior to the sing-a-thon — but he says whatever the outcome, having people gather for the holidays is the real reward.
“I think with a year of experience under our belts the record will follow this year,” he said. “But it’s superfluous to the idea of just bringing people together and singing.”
This Guinness World Record event kicks off a Prudential Center celebration of the Holiday Pops season at Symphony Hall.
“There are a lot of [holiday activities] going on this weekend, it’s just a matter of getting enough people there,” said Lockhart.
