Just 21 days after Brandon Spikes’ second stint in Foxboro began, it has now come to an end after the Patriots released the linebacker following a bizarre incident involving an abandoned car this past weekend.

A 2011 Mercedes Maybach registered to Spikes was found abandoned and with front-end damage on I-495 in Foxboro around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. The driver of the car reported hitting a deer around that time, according to OnStar. No deer was seen near the abandoned car.

Meanwhile, Massachusetts State Police said that a car crash occurred around the same time and in the same location. All three occupants of a 2009 Nissan Murano, a 51-year-old man, a 32-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy, were transported to the hospital after their car was reportedly rear-ended by another vehicle. None of the injuries were said to be life-threatening.

History of bad judgment

In May, many Patriots fans were stunned that Bill Belichick was bringing back the linebacker. Spikeshad bad-mouthed the organization on the way out in his first stint with the team, and typically Belichick has no problem burning bridges with mouthy malcontents.

Prior to his anti-Patriots rants, there were several other odd – but not criminal – Spikes incidents.

In 2010, an amateur porn video featuring Spikes receiving oral pleasure from a Kim Kardashian-lookalike popped up online on something called ChatRoulette. (CLICK HERE FOR LINK TO VIDEO) This came shortly after then-Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers praised Spikes as a “great young man” upon the Patriots drafting him. Spikes was dating Rivers’ daughter, Callie, at the time as the two had met at the University of Florida.

During this time-period UF wasn’t yet viewed as “U of Miami lite.” Milk and cookies Tim Tebow was the star of those late 2000s teams, after all, and Aaron Hernandez had not yet emerged as Connecticut’s answer to Tony Soprano. Head coach Urban Meyer, for all intents and purposes, was simplyrunning a clean, successful program.

Spikes always wore his Gators pride on his sleeve, right up through this April when Hernandez was convicted of murdering Odin Lloyd. Spikes tweeted out minutes after the verdict in the case, “IM CONFUSED ABOUT THE JUSTICE SYSTEM THESE DAYS !!!”

Second chance (with Patriots) wasted

Spikes made a funny a couple weeks back when he said he had “kissed and made up with the ‘Hoodie.’” But there will be no further kissing in and around Gillette Stadium between the two.

In fact, Spikes’ NFL career is now very much in jeopardy. He’ll likely sign on with another NFL team to a “last chance deal,” but one more slip-up and he’s done when it comes to playing on Sundays.

Spikes seemed genuinely happy to be back in the Patriots “family.”He was glowing last month at another opportunity with the reigning Super Bowl champs.

“It’s the Patriot Way,” Spikes said. “It obviously works and I am just glad to be part of it and get another opportunity to prove I can play here and hold myself accountable to my teammates and coaches. I just want to prove them right.

“I’m definitely fortunate for the opportunity Bill gave me and sometimes you need that separation and it kind of makes you more appreciative and thankful.”

The love-in continuted right up until last week whenSpikes tweeted out a picture of himself and Tom Brady on June 6, saying, “Good time last night with the Goat !! #GoPatriots #Patriots #PatriotsNation”
