British Columbians are the Canadians most likely to drink tap water directly from the faucet and have the most confidence in the safety and quality of their drinking water, a survey revealed yesterday.
Bob Sandford, Canadian chair of a UN water initiative, said while Canadians rank water as the most important natural resource, their efforts to conserve water seem to be decreasing.
Sandford didn’t know how to account for the drop in conservation efforts, but suggested it may be due to distractions like the struggling economy.
The third annual Canadian Water Attitudes Study found that 78 per cent of Canadians believe they conserve water, but many admit to water-wasting activities like running water while washing dishes or hosing down driveways.
In B.C., the survey found that 93 per cent of people were confident in the quality of their drinking water, the highest in the nation. They were also most likely to drink straight from the tap (57 per cent) and had the highest awareness of local water conservation initiatives.
