British MP’s ban from Canada sparks protest

Activists gathered outside the downtown Vancouver office of Immigration Canada yesterday to protest the Conservative government’s decision to refuse entry to an outspoken, anti-war British politician.

British MP George Galloway was told Friday that he would not be allowed into Canada for a four-city speaking tour because of his support for Hamas, which is considered in Canada to be a terrorist organization.

Derek O’Keefe, co-chair of the Vancouver StopWar Coalition, was among those bearing signs and wearing duct tape over their mouths.

“It makes it look like we have a very backward, neo-conservative government and that we’re afraid of open debate and dialogue.”

Galloway chastised Canadian Immigration Minister Jason Kenney’s decision in an article for the Guardian Saturday, saying: “That’s the way the right-wing, last-ditch dead-enders of Bushism in Ottawa conduct their business.”
