A 17-year-old from the Bronx died at 4:18 a.m. this morning at Jacobi Hospital while in police custody, the NYPD reported.
Police responded to a 911 call at 3:10 p.m. Monday reporting a male assaulted at the Edenwald H0uses, the largest public housing development in the Bronx, and discovered Antonio Lyles, 17, badly beaten.
He was taken to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Cops said they acquired video footage that showed Lyles fired three shots at two males in front of 1132 East 229 Drive South, then fled south through the Edenwald Houses.
A group of more than seven men chased him through the housing complex, police said. They caught up with him near East 22nd Street and Schiefflin Place where they attacked him, punching and kicking him.
A witness who called 911 reportedly saw one of the assailants picking up a large rock and bludgeoning Lyles repeatedly in the head with it.

Police placed Lyles under arrest in the hospital before his death. They also arrested two people in the course of the investigation into his assault: Stanle Hampton, 18, and Ezequiel Pena, 20.
The arrests came after a “debriefing” of several men brought into the 47th precinct, cops said. The interviews did not reveal the identities of the two people Lyles was seen shooting at in the surveillance video, but police were able to arrest Hampton and Pena and charged them with assault as well as gang assault.
The medical examiner will determine the cause of Lyles’ death as the police investigation into the incident continues. The Internal Affairs Bureau is also conducting an investigation.
Lyles had two prior arrests, one in 2012 for assault and another in 2011 for burglary.
