A Brookline employee will be in court Wednesday after he allegedly embezzled money from the town.

Brookline police said in a statement on Tuesday that the employee will be arraigned in Brookline District Court on a charge of larceny by embezzlement after his arrest on Monday.

The employee worked as an administrative assistant in the engineering division of the Department of Public Works, police said. Police did not identify the man, but his name Joshua Layne, according to the Globe.

Police also did not say how much money Layne is accused of embezzling.

The arrest comes after an investigation into the misappropriation of money received by the town’s Department of Public Works.

“The town considers the misappropriation of public funds to be an extraordinarily serious offense, and requires strict employee compliance with the state conflict of interest law and the town’s policy against fraudulent conduct, misappropriation and corruption,” Brookline police said in a statement.

Layne was placed on administrative leave pending a disciplinary hearing.
