Brooklyn Brewery is booking you for the entire weekend

Now in its fourth year, the 2016 Mash Tour, which lands in Boston this weekend, is Brooklyn Brewery’s citywide update on the concept of the beer festival.

“It’s only focused on highlighting what is local in each city, with a heavy presence of culture, food, music, creative artistic mediums and, obviously, beer,” Brooklyn’s community ambassador and educator Gabe Barry says. “This year the tour is looking to reimagine what we mean by celebration.”

Beginning Thursday night, there are four components to the weekend’s festivities. Dinner with Friends is a riff on the traditional beer dinner, with Brooklyn’s Head of Culinary Programming Chef Andrew Gerson working with the team at Hojoko on a menu featuring an American Wagyu short rib with gochujang and green kimchi, paired with some of the brewery’s rarer beers. “It’s a time when we get to showcase some of the more rare beers in our portfolio,” Barry adds. “One exciting offering in particular is Serpent, is a collaboration done with Thornbridge Brewery in the UK: A Belgian tripel style, it’s aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels over cider lees, for a funky, tart aged sour.”

On Friday, the party heads to Royale for a free performance from Cults, the dreamy noir-pop New York City duo. But save some room for partying and drinking for Saturday, when the Beer Mansion pop-up takes over Whiskey Saigon. What is a Beer Mansion, exactly, you might be wondering?

“It’s about taking the wonderful array of flavors and quantifying it into a multispace venue,” Barry explains. “Each room starts to take on the personality of different beer styles, which are then built out into art installations. In other words, it’s a like an interactive beer museum and performance space, where you can try a variety of styles, interact with the production process and be entertained along the way. You might just learn something too.”

In the Saison Room, for example, Gerson is riffing off the idea of the traditional passed-bite, by preparing dishes, literally, on guests’ hands. “That’s been a lot of fun to watch people be pushed out of their comfort level,” Barry says.

On Sunday, the activities are centered around Inman and Porter squares, where a variety of local businesses are taking part in a walking beer-focused tour of the city. The day begins at Trailhead, a combined pop-up Brooklyn bar and Timberland shop, where guests can pick up coupons to a number of area hot spots, like Trina’s, The Independent, Taza Chocolate and Union Square Donuts for free and discounted beers and treats.

“Its all about celebrating the local, creative collaborative journey of what celebration is,” she says. “We hope to create a voice and venue for all these individuals to come together and we see beer as the through line.” For tickets, pricing and info visit brooklynbrewerymash.com.
