Brooklyn Bridge Park’s condo cash

Brooklyn Bridge Park will be completed with the help of a cash infusion brought in by more high-rise apartment buildings erected on park grounds.

In a deal that was finalized yesterday, city and state officials agreed to allow additional private housing to be built in the park. The development will help provide funds badly needed to complete the popular park, say supporters.

Legislators who first opposed the city’s plan to add more housing acquiesced to the compromise once the city agreed the high-rises would be shorter and smaller than originally planned.

Planners also envision a skating rink, a year-round recreation area and tennis courts. Once completed, the now-25-acre park will eventually be expanded to 85 acres, taking over East River piers not currently being used. State Sen. Daniel Squadron also announced that the park will include a temporary pool for the next five summers, and a recreational “bubble” to make the park usable during the winter.
