C-Train kitchen party

The typically quiet morning C-Train ride got a lot more exciting yesterday when a few easterners took over.

Nova Scotia tourism officials staged a “travelling kitchen party” on one lucky C-Train to promote the hosting of next year’s Tim Hortons Brier in Halifax.

Calgary Transit customers like Vince Berdan, 25, got a good dose of Nova Scotian hospitality and music, including performances by Celtic musicians and the province’s famed 78th Highlanders.

“As I walked onto the train this morning, everyone had a smile on their face,” Berdan said. “Everyone is usually pretty stiff. This is the closest I’ve been to Nova Scotia and I like it.”

A kitchen party can be anywhere at any time, according to Doug Matthews, manager of tourism marketing for the Halifax Brier.

“We do these kind of crazy things all the time,” said Matthews.

“I saw a little surprise on everyone’s face as they stepped onto the train and we said, ‘Welcome to Nova Scotia.’ I think this will get it in their heads to come to Nova Scotia, whether that’s for the Brier or otherwise.”

Ald. Bob Hawkesworth hopped on the happening C-Train downtown, excited to be among easterners, as he visits Nova Scotia at least once a year.

Hugh Avery, chairperson of the 2010 Brier, said this is one of the first steps in generating excitement for next year.

“We’re here to learn about what Calgary has done right,” he said.
