Casual reigns at McNasty’s

Philthy McNasty’s

130 Eglinton Ave. E.

Ambience: They call this the place where Canadians “let loose” and if you’ve ever visited a Philthy McNasty’s you’ll know exactly why. The Yonge-Eglinton location is particularly loose, the beer flows freely and the crowd is extraordinarily friendly; the bar lives up to its high-brow moniker in every way imaginable. The women wear as little as possible, the men proudly don sports gear or dress casually for their night, the beer specials are attractive and the food is pretty cheap — in short, you’ll think you’ve died and gone to Sudbury (and before I get hate mail, I’ve been to Sudbury and it’s a nice city — lots of nickel, some good bars, what more can you ask for?) While upstairs is devoted to lounging and hockey watching, the downstairs dance floor is where things tend to get really Philthy. That could be a good thing.

Crowd: As you might expect, Philthy plays to a much younger clientele, as well as those looking to go home with said younger clientele. Most are of average university-going age and are looking for a good time. Things can get a bit rowdy, but no one seems to mind.

Dress code: Wearing underwear would be the base recommendation, but even that could be seen as an impediment for late-night festivities if all goes well. Use your discretion and dress like you’re about to visit a frat party or your friend’s cottage.

Should I dance on the bar? Hell, yeah, and bring your friend up with you!

Will I get lucky? The question is not whether you’ll get lucky, it’s how many times and with whom.

Best reason to pay a visit: See the point above.

Cocktail du jour: You gotta love a bar with hockey masks affixed to its draught taps. That said, it’s all about brew, shooters and anything that can make this crowd look prettier.

Hours: Monday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
