Celtics: Fab Melo hits head on door frame, suffers concussion

The saying goes: When one door closes, another one opens. If your Feb Melo, though, you better duck.

Melo was recalled by the Celtics prior to Wednesday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies but it wasn’t to suit up for the C’s. Instead, Melo was being checked out for a concussion he sustained on the road with the Maine Red Claws. The injury occurred when the7-foot Melo walked into a door frame.

“Being seven feet, I always duck entering doorways, but I got distracted,” Melo said.

Melo, who was talking to somebody as he was walking through the double door, caught the top of his head on a fixture in the middle of it.

The rest is, well, a mystery, seeing as Melo got a concussion due to the accident. But Melo did note that it occurred on the road in Sioux Falls.

Celtics head coach Doc Rivers didn’t exactly sound too surprised by the news of how the concussion occurred.

“I think, what did you have, ‘Manny being Manny’? I think five years when Fab is playing terrific for us here, we’re going to have some ‘Fab being Fab’ moments. He just got a head start,” Rivers said with a laugh.

The Celtics will most likely send Melo back to Maine in the next couple of days, where he has played extremely well as of late.

In 12 games with the Red Claws, Melo is averaging 10.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.83 blocks. He blocked a D-League record 14 shots against the Erie Bayhawks on Dec. 22 and dropped a stat line of 32 points, nine rebounds, and nine blocks against the Idaho Stampede on Dec. 26.
