Charles H. Hulse students get hands-on learning

Guests at the Valentine’s Gala fundraiser for the Museum of Civilization will enjoy a four-course meal whipped up by executive chef Michael Daniels, but sometimes there’s nothing better than bread you made yourself, fresh from the oven.

On Thursday, Grade 2 students from Charles H. Hulse Public School learned that as they made pita bread from scratch at the museum, one of the activities supported by the Valentine’s Gala.

“Because they’re doing it with their own hands, that’s what it is about,” said program interpreter Renee Lemieux, who led the kids in Thursday’s baking.

“That’s how you learn.”

Their teacher, Susan Goodwin, said these programs are vital for students like hers.

“The children don’t get out very much from our neighbourhood,” she said.

“(It’s a) fairly low socio-economic area, and just for them to get on a bus and escalator was an amazing experience today, and anything we can get for our kids is a great thing.”
