Chase suspect appears in court

A man accused of leading police on a terrifying rush-hour chase in a transport truck appeared in Port Coquitlam court yesterday.

Randall Girard, 49, is charged with three counts of assaulting police after he allegedly stole a truck from a Pitt Meadows farm Tuesday morning.

Girard, balding, goateed and wearing a red prison jumpsuit, listened to yesterday’s proceedings through a slit in the glass surrounding the prisoner’s dock. Most of what was said is under a publication ban and cannot be reported.

The 49-year-old, who police say is originally from New Westminster, was initially charged with three counts of attempted murder, but the charges have now been changed to assault with a weapon.

On Tuesday, a naked man stole a pair of coveralls and a large transport truck from a farm in Pitt Meadows. He was pulled over by police and told officers that he was going to blow up a bridge and that they’d never catch him.

The man drove away, starting a chase that lasted about 30 minutes. The pursuit was captured live by a Global B.C. traffic reporter and broadcast during the morning news.
