Chicago Fire FC may trade top selection for MLS draft

The No. 1 pick may not be the Chicago Fire’s much longer, this with the MLS SuperDraft just a couple hours away.

Metro New York has learned that the Fire could trade away the top selection in today’s college draft, a pick that likely will end up being defender Josh Yaro out of Georgetown. New York City F.C. and the Colorado Rapids as well as the Philadelphia Union have all enquired about trading up for the first pick. In addition, one top Western Conference team is also interested in making a deal with the Fire.

Yaro is the gem of the draft, a strong central defender with a good physical presence and some savviness on the ball. He is the most MLS-ready player in the draft, especially since he has the kind of speed that means he can cover a lot of ground in a hurry.

He can play as an outside back but in all likelihood is a better fit in the middle of the defense.

The worst team in MLS last year, the Fire could benefit from selecting Yaro but with multiple holes on their roster, they might get more value trading the pick away.
