Child killed waiting to board bus

A seven-year-old boy was killed after the 17-year-old driver of a vehicle allegedly failed to stop for a school bus on a rural road southwest of Calgary early Tuesday.

A school bus was stopped with flashing lights activated along 240 St W, near Millarville, to pick up three kids, according to police, when a vehicle traveling southbound came up behind the bus.

The RCMP said the vehicle failed to stop, passing the bus and striking the child. The vehicle and the child both ended up in the ditch, according to police.

The road was snow covered and light snow was falling at the time, police said.

The teen driver was shaken but uninjured.

RCMP say the collision is still under investigation.

Millarville is 40 km southwest of Calgary.
