Chipotle’s E. coli outbreak spreads to New York

First, Shiga toxin-induced E. coli came for the Pacific Northwest’s Chipotles. Now, the scourge that closed over 40 of the burritorestaurants has been found on the East Coast, too.

The Centers for Disease Control added New York to the list of affected stateson Friday, with one confirmed casein Erie County. Thisbrings the total to six statesaffected by anoutbreak of E. coli last month that has sickened 45 people, hospitalizing 16. There have been no deaths.

“The epidemiologic evidence available at this time suggests that a common meal item or ingredient served at Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants in several states is a likely source of this outbreak,” according to a statement from the CDC.

The culprit,Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, is a nasty one.Symptomsinclude bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps that develop about three or four days after eating tainted food. Though most people recover after about a week, severe complications can occur, soget to a doctor if you think you may have been infected.
