City biz burns

Employees of a north-side industrial business are trying to pick up the pieces and start over after a devastating fire left their workplace in ruin.

A blaze broke out at Energy Saving Products, located at 124 Street and 126 Avenue around 10 p.m. Tuesday.

An employee at the adjacent CN Rail yard was the first to call in the blaze, having spotted it from a watchtower.

“There was a lot of different coloured smoke,” said Emergency Services spokesman John Muir, adding that as a precaution, a Hazmat team was on scene.

The flames spread quickly through the 1,300 square-foot building, and the roof collapsed within the first hour.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined. Investigators are examining surveillance footage captured from CN rail to aid in the investigation.

The two-alarm blaze was under control by 12:30 a.m., through the work of 18 fire crews.

Damages are estimated at around $4 million.

No staff were in the building at the time the fire started, and no injuries were reported.
