City elections official suspended without pay after massive Brooklyn voter purge

Major problems at the polls during New York’s primary vote lead to the suspension without pay of a city elections official Thursday.

The Board of Election’s Chief Clerk Diane Haslett-Rudiano reportedly purged more than 100,000 Brooklyn voters from the city’s rolls, causing major headaches during Tuesday’s primary.

Sources reportedly told the New York Daily News that Haslett-Rudiano accidentally removed the names after failing to follow steps implemented to avoid such errors.

“The Commissioners’ Executive Committee of the Board of Elections in the City of New York voted to suspend Borough Office Chief Clerk, Diane Haslett-Rudiano without pay, effective immediately pending an internal investigation into the administration of the voter rolls in the Borough of Brooklyn,” the board said in a statement provided to DNAinfo.

“The Board will fully cooperate with the investigations currently being conducted by the Office of the New York State Attorney General and The Office of the New York City Comptroller.”

Brooklyn lost 102,717, or 8 percent, of its active voters from Nov. 1 2015 to April 1, 2016, the Daily News reported, also observing it’s the only county in New York who lost voters during that period.

The state’s attorney general received over 1,000 complaints about voting problems on Election Day, according to a statement from that office.
