City enters SecondLife online

Now you can get a life, or another life in this case, as the City of Edmonton has announced a partnership with SecondLife, the online virtual tour and gaming website.

The website allows a user to create an avatar and explore a three-dimensional virtual universe, which will enable Edmontonians to explore the city and conduct business online.

Edmonton is one of the first Canadian cities to create a SecondLife environment. The city has programmed a civic environment, which explores city hall and connects to other cities; a cultural environment, which explores areas like the Muttart Observatory; as well as a commerce link and a community zone where individuals and businesses can operate online, linking to organizations and educational information.

“Why we created the parallel universe is that we always want to be looking at new technology and understanding the application of it,” said Chris Moore, chief information officer for the City of Edmonton. “Immersive technology is going to change the way people interact and do business.”
