Toronto police will examine evidence of traffic ticket fixing and benefits fraud turned up by Toronto’s auditor general and by Manulife Financial, the city’s benefits administrator.
Nine city employees were suspended with pay last week after Manulife auditors spotted what appeared to be fraudulent benefit claims.
“The nine people, those are in our intake process with our fraud squad,” said police spokesman Mark Pugash. The suspicious claims are being investigated.
Jeff Griffiths, the city’s auditor general, also reported two complaints of possible ticket fixing.
In one case, more than 500 parking tickets had been cancelled, apparently by a single employee.
The city’s investigation couldn’t confirm the employee’s involvement, however, because supporting records that should have been maintained had been destroyed.
Pugash said police want to take a look at the allegations, although Griffiths said he had yet to talk with police.
