City mandates sex ed in schools

The city’s public middle and high schools must teach sex education, city Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott announced yesterday.

Most schools already do offer sex-ed classes, but now it will be a requirement.

“We have students who are having sex before the age of 13,” Walcott said, adding that the city owes it to students to teach them how to avoid things like sexually transmitted diseases.

Students must now take sex-ed as a sixth- or seventh-grader and then once more in high school.

New York City’s rates of teen pregnancy and rate of STD infection far exceed the national rate.
