Classes cancelled after blaze at St. Elizabeth Elementary

Roughly 240 students at St. Elizabeth Elementary School were told to stay home yesterday a blaze damaged four classroom portables Monday.

Lori Nagy, a spokesman with Edmonton Catholic Schools, says the fire was contained in one of the portables, but the blaze caused smoke damage to three other portables at the school near 77 Street and 36 Avenue sometime around 8:30 a.m.

“Because of possible smoke damage to the rest of the school, we feel it is important to close the school Tuesday to give our facilities staff enough time to restore the air quality in the school,” said Nagy in a statement.

Police say emergency responders followed a teenage male to a nearby residence and a second teenage male was later taken into custody.

Both males were released and no charges have been laid, police said.

Fire investigators have so far pegged the damages at $100,000.
